COMMENTS FROM TIM TUCKER, AJC 2001

IF YOU FOLLOWED SPORTS IN ATLANTA IN THE 1970'S YOU KNOW WELL THE LEGEND OF ANTHONY FLANAGAN-- A QUARTERBACK WHO LED HIS FOOTBALL TEAM TO A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, A POINT GUARD WHO LED HIS BASKETBALL TEAM TO TWO STATE TITLES, AN ATHLETE SO INCREDIBLY GIFTED THAT PEOPLE WHO SAW HIM PLAY AT SOUTHWEST HIGH MORE THAN A QUARTER-CENTURY AGO STILL CAN'T BELIEVE WHAT THEY SAW.

COMMENTS FROM HIS HIGH SCHOOL COACH DAVID JONES

I 'VE CERTAINLY NEVER COACHED ANOTHER KID, NOR HAVE I EVER SEEN ONE, WHO IS ANYTHING CLOSE TO FLAN IN ABILITY OR IN THE EFFECT HE HAD ON HIS TEAM AND ON OPPONENTS,"  HIS PRESENCE WAS AWESOME.

"WHEN MAGIC JOHNSON CAME ON THE SCENE, EVERYBODY WAS SO THRILLED," JONES ADDED. 'BUT I HAD SEEN ALL THOSE THINGS WITH ANTHONY FLANAGAN A FEW YEARS PRIOR. PEOPLE ALWAYS ASK ME: 'JUST HOW GOOD WAS HE ?' AND MY  STANDARD ANSWER IS: IF IT HAD A BALL INVOLVED, HE'D BEAT YOU AT IT.'"

JONES, NOW COACHING AT BRADWELL INSTITUTE IN HINESVILLE, WAS VIVIDLY DESCRIBING ON MONDAY TWO CREATIVE PASSES THAT FLANAGAN MADE IN A 1970S BASKETBALL GAME. "THOSE TWO PASSES, TO THIS DAY , AMAZE ME," HE SAID.

"IT WAS LIKE MAGIC WHEN THE KIDS WOULD SEE HIM COMING IN THE BUILDING,' "THEY WOULD COME RUNNING.....HE GAVE SO MUCH OF HIMSELF TO THE COMMUNITY. IF A KID NEEDED A COAT, HE WOULD GIVE THEM HIS."
